Sessions Votes Against Iraq War Bill

Sen. Jeff Sessions once again toed the GOP party line and voted against the Iraq War Bill. The bill, which passed 51-47, provides $123 billion in additional funding for combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the bill also orders President Bush to begin withdrawing troops within 120 days of passage.

In voting against the bill, Sessions issued the following statements:

I voted against the supplemental appropriations bill because mandating a withdrawal date from Iraq would undercut the authority of the President and General Petraeus.

Sessions is exactly right for once, the Iraq War Bill indeed undercuts Bush’s ability to mismanage the war. When voters delivered both chambers of Congress to Democratic majorities, they sent a clear message that they wanted our troops out of Iraq. That’s a message Sessions apparently didn’t get.

Though it is too early to express a certain opinion, some progress is being made in Iraq now. For Congress to order the pull-out of troops when substantial progress may be occurring this fall is irresponsible. I am very disappointed in this vote.

The American people have been waiting four long years for progress in Iraq. Given Bush’s track record, he deserves no more chances.

This misguided attempt to micromanage the war will only delay the funding our troops need to fight the war.

While Sessions can try to spin his vote, the simple fact is that he cast his vote in opposition to additional funding for our troops on the ground.

Fantastic, Trent! I’m very stoked you created this website. I’ve been following Kos’s references to Sparks this week, and it looks like we’ve got a good shot of sitting Sessions on the bench, finally.

Getting great traction and a well timed website. I’ll give it some air time on my blog next week.

Keep up the good work and let me know if I can help in any way!

I too welcome this site and I sincerely hope that it can become a beacon for the netroots in Alabama. Howard Dean, not to mention Joe Trippi (credit where much credit is due) made me a firm believer in how the net, and those who truly care to make a difference, can become quite a force for change. I will be spreading the message that this site exists and let us keep the information coming and let us hold Jeff Sessions feet to the proverbial fire!

Sessions’ and Dick Shelby’s feet need to be held to the fire on this vote. Their vote against this bill will cut funding for the troops, period. The fact that they don’t like one provision in this bill was not a good enough reason to cut that funding. It looks like the same old same old GOP. If they don’t get their way, they bitch and moan and cry like little babies. Talk about pansies. It’s time for a change! It’s time for a Democrat like Ron Sparks to represent Alabama!!!
