Sessions’ Ignorance
Below are excerpts of the statement released by Sessions’ office regarding the passage of the Iraq/Afghanistan supplemental spending bill
I voted against the supplemental appropriations bill because mandating a withdrawal date from Iraq would undercut the authority of the President and General Petraeus.
When your ideas are shortsighted and misguided, your authority needs to be undercut.
It mandates how and where soldiers must be deployed.
Actually, this is a very vague and broad statement, it doesn’t, it only gives a timetable from withdrawal out of Iraq.
If Senators really want to force American troops out of Iraq, Congress could withhold funding since it holds the power of the purse.
And this may need to happen, but for this bill, you decided it was better to delay getting the much needed funding to the troops in the field.
President Bush has promised to veto any bill that includes a withdrawal date.
Let him veto the bill and suffer the GOP.
This misguided attempt to micromanage the war will only delay the funding our troops need to fight the war.
The delay will come when Bush vetoes the bill and the GOP continues to stall.
Though it is too early to express a certain opinion, some progress is being made in Iraq now. For Congress to order the pull-out of troops when substantial progress may be occurring this fall is irresponsible.
Blah blah blah, yeah yeah, whatever. This is exactly the same bs we heard many months ago, but yet, more chaos and killing insued shortly thereafter and the civil war in Iraq got worse. Actually, if this holds true, our timetable to withdraw should be met by dancing in the streets by the Iraqi’s and may in turn lead to greater peace in the country. It sounds to me like this is the perfect time to signal the beginning of Iraq’s independence!
The GOP shell game must end, and that starts with a change in Washington leadership. We can change our leadership here at home by dumping Sessions and electing a real leader like Ron Sparks in 2008.

Couldn’t agree more.
Sessions is simply nauseating in how he parrots the most inane GOP talking points. I have yet to hear Sessions’ plan for Iraq.
I think, in his little world, he thinks we’re winning. Therefore, we just need to stay the course.
Well, we’re not winning. And letting Bush continue fighting a failing war won’t help America or Iraq.
Kudos to the Democratic congress for doing what it was elected to do — put checks on this ridiculousy incompetent President.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:21 pmSenator Sessions was correct in voting against this bill. Congress does not have the authority to begin or end a war, and in this bill, they are trying to do just that. Granted, this war has not gone as expected or hoped, but the reality is that we are in the war nonetheless. As such, we do owe it to ourselves, to the Iraqi people, and to our future security to give this potentially last, best hope a chance to make a difference and possibly turn the tide. Should this latest effort fail, then perhaps then it is time to discuss a withdrawal, however whenever such a withdrawal occurs, it is foolhardy to set (and publicize) a date certain for that withdrawal. For all of these reasons, Sessions’ vote was correct.
April 2nd, 2007 at 9:18 amI so disagree. In my view, setting a deadline is like setting a budget. It’s something you strive for, but almost never occurs. In addition, it sends a message to Iraqis that they are in charge of their own destiny and that we will not be there, in full force mind you, forever. I firmly believe this will alleviate a lot of the anxiety and violence in the country.
