The Contradictory and Hypocritical Mr. Sessions
While listening to Jeff Sessions’ Wednesday press conference, there was one exchange that jumped out at me. The reporter goes out of his way to kiss-up to the senator and Sessions goes on the attack against Democratic attempts to bring the Iraq War to a conclusion.
While I’m sure my transcript isn’t perfect, there are several grammatical errors accurately recorded:
Reporter: Hey, Senator! Good afternoon to ya!
Sessions: Yes sir, Steve.
Reporter: How you doing?! I hope you’re well!
Sessions: Good, alright.
Reporter: Getting beyond the political posturing of certain members of the House and Senate at the moment if we can. Give us a glimpse, if you have one, of how sides are progressing on resolving these questions over the supplemental and how much longer have we got before the troops have to start throwing rocks at each other?
Sessions: The latest word I’ve heard just a few moments ago, when Mitch McConnell the Republican leader, is that a meeting will occur today between Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, and Republican leaders in the House and Senate, to discuss it. His expectation is that no agreement will be reached, that the bill will be uh, uh, uh, that there will be a veto of the legislation and that it will come back for further debate and discussion. It’s just unthinkable to me that we will not be able to rapidly reach an agreement about this matter. The troops are there today. The fourth brigade of five new brigades is arriving now. The fifth one has not arrived and won’t for some months perhaps. We’ve committed Gen. Petraeus to go there and execute this policy; we need to fund this policy at least for the immediate future and give it a chance to succeed. In fact, I think there’s really a bipartisan agreement on that. But the language in the bill is still problematic. The President will not accept it. I expect we’ve got a veto and hopefully something can be worked out quickly. Because as the supplemental is delayed later and later, the Defense Department is required and has to go through all kinds of gymnastics to transfer monies to make sure our soldiers do have even bullets to fire. And this is not a good thing, in light of the fact that we are at war. They need to be focused on how to win the war, not having to move money around to make sure our troops have the basic needs of combat. So, I think that’s where we are. I’m not, I do not expect. Let’s backup. I do not expect that the meeting this afternoon will result in an agreement. My understanding is it’s likely the President will veto this language that’s in this supplemental. It will come back to the Congress and it will be our absolute duty, in my view, to pass legislation that is consistent with our congressional majority but also does not undermined our soldiers in the field.
Reporter: Senator Reid and Pelosi and a number of other Democrats have said more than once, I think one of the latest I heard was Sen. Levin, saying that there is no intention of cutting off funding to the troops. And yet, there is that old thing my grandma used to say about actions speaking louder than words. What’s your read?
Sessions: I don’t, um, what was your question, exactly?
Reporter: Well, the Democrats have said repeatedly that they do not intend to cut off the funding for the troops. And yet, this back and forth over the language over the supplemental, i.e the withdrawal deadline, is in my mind a question of actions here speaking louder than their words.
Sessions: I think that’s exactly correct! The way this is playing out, and it’s deliberate. This legislation should have already been sent to the President some time ago. They delayed sending it to him. Making it later and later in the process, making the demands for the supplemental war funds more and more critical every single day. And by gaining this leverage they hope to force him to accept congressional direction as to the precise deployment of troops and when they should be deployed, regardless of the military situation on the ground. I don’t think that’s a good principle. I do think that it’s a battle for leverage and I don’t think it’s healthy. I really believe as Gen. McCaffrey said in the hearing the other day, and he hasn’t hesitated to be critical of how we’ve conducted the war in Iraq. He said I see no reason to do this and he wondered why the Democrats would interject themselves in undermining the possibility of success in Iraq. I think that’s, hopefully, they’ll come to that conclusion. Hopefully, after this event the Democrats will accept some language that the President can accept and that we can pass and get this money to our troops. But it’s not been helpful in my view! For the morale of our soldiers, for the confidence of our allies, or the mood of the enemy to have our nation appear so divided.
While Jeff Sessions was able to effectively spew the GOP talking points (which we know he’s real good at) in attacking the Democratic proposal, he directly contradicts the statements of Bush’s own Defense Secretary. Earlier this week, Robert Gates said “The debate in Congress . . . has been helpful in demonstrating to the Iraqis that American patience is limited. The strong feelings expressed in the Congress about the timetable probably has had a positive impact . . . in terms of communicating to the Iraqis that this is not an open-ended commitment.”
Sessions also fumes that the Iraq supplemental bill, which he voted against, should have reached the President’s desk by now, sixty-something days after its introduction. However, Sessions was noticeably silent last year when the GOP-controlled Congress took 119 days to pass supplemental war funding. Sounds just a tad hypocritical.
