Tuscaloosa News: Sessions Should Have Kept His Mouth Shut
The Tuscaloosa News joins in the fun:
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., might have done better to keep his mouth shut during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings last week on the firings of eight U.S. attorneys.Attorney Gen. Alberto Gonzales is on the hot seat for the firings, which critics say were politically motivated. He has told several different accounts of the firings, and some key Republicans have joined Democrats in calling for his resignation.
“It is generous to say the attorney general’s communications about this matter have been inconsistent,” Sen. Tom Colburn, R-Okla., said at Thursday’s hearings. “The consequence should be the resignation of the attorney general.”
Sessions, for his part, admonished Gonzales to be honest about the firings, saying his ability to lead the Justice Department is in question.
“The integrity of the office you hold must be above reproach,” Sessions said.
Yet some critics say Sessions might heed the same advice. Earlier this month, it was disclosed that an e-mail message from the White House urged the Justice Department to call Sessions to give him information about appointing a former aide to Republican strategist Karl Rove as an interim U.S. attorney in Arkansas to replace one of the fired officials.
“WH political reached out to Sen. Sessions and requested that he ask helpful questions to make clear that Tim Griffin is qualified to serve,” a January 2007 e-mail message read.
Sessions said last week that he doesn’t recall speaking with anyone at the White House about Griffin before a Feb. 6 hearing. But the record shows that at that hearing, Sessions covered all of the highlights on Griffin in a Republican “talking points” document on the nominee and praised his resume — just as the White House and Justice Department apparently requested, on the evidence of the e-mails.
That may be just coincidence, though failure to recall is a far cry from a flat denial. Interestingly, Gonzales cited that same failure in his appearance last week before the Judiciary Committee.
At 71 points, the attorney general claimed a faulty memory when he was asked key questions like who picked the eight attorneys to be fired or whether Gonzales himself was involved in the evaluation process that was cited in their dismissals.
Poor memory or not, there is no doubt that the attorney general has compromised his ability to serve effectively.
Certainly, no rational person can argue with the conclusion that Sessions offered in an interview after the hearing:
“There are some problems that he [Gonzales] just hasn’t handled well,’ said the junior senator from Alabama, “and it might just be best if he came to a conclusion that the department is better served if he’s not there.”
President Bush, at whose pleasure Gonzales serves, should have reached that conclusion long ago.
I believe this man may just be writing out his own walking papers.
