What Did Sessions Do with His Three Hours?
During Tuesday’s immigration debate on the floor of the Senate, Jeff Sessions secured and had to fill three hours of time. We’ve already mentioned how he spent some of that time trying to explain how a bill becomes a law.
As Joe has pointed out, listening to Sessions for three hours has got to be one of the greatest wastes of time known to man. Bless poor Bob Casey, who was presiding over the Senate at the time, for having to sit through it.
Sessions has the text of his three hours worth of remarks up on his website. It’s over 11,000 words and about 20 pages long. However, he let Oklahoma’s James Inhofe use some of time, so it wasn’t quite a solid three hours of nothing but Sessions’ rambling.
I’ve tried trudging through it, but haven’t yet been able to muster the stamina to finish it.
Sessions poll numbers reveal some very strange segments of support for the Senator. A majority of pro-choice Alabamians support him as do a majority of pro-labor union Alabamians and nearly half of the state’s African-American population. Even a majority of Alabamians who believe in global warming support the senator. This has do to do with one thing and one thing only: Sessions has been such an ineffective Senator that he has stayed out of the spotlight and most Alabamians know him only for his (false) hard line on immigration. The fact that he is sitting at 60% with the support of all these groups which will, in all liklihood, wither away in the face of an intense Senate race that reveals his stance on the issues does not bode well for the junior senator. Sparks needs to take a legitimate hard stance on immigration, hammer away at Sessions over NAFTA, CAFTA, and his lack of support for American troops, and run to the center on abortion and gay marriage.
