SUSA: Sessions Sees Uptick and Support from Unlikely Sources
Jeff Sessions’ latest Survey USA numbers show a net gain of eleven points since last month’s numbers. Since I run a blog dedicated to beating Sessions, I’m of course predisposed to write off this month’s polling as an anomaly that doesn’t quite fit the trendlines established by SUSA polling over the last few months.
From the comments, BearcatDem delves into the specifics and emerges with some interesting observations:
Sessions poll numbers reveal some very strange segments of support for the Senator. A majority of pro-choice Alabamians support him as do a majority of pro-labor union Alabamians and nearly half of the state’s African-American population. Even a majority of Alabamians who believe in global warming support the senator. This has do to do with one thing and one thing only: Sessions has been such an ineffective Senator that he has stayed out of the spotlight and most Alabamians know him only for his (false) hard line on immigration. The fact that he is sitting at 60% with the support of all these groups which will, in all liklihood, wither away in the face of an intense Senate race that reveals his stance on the issues does not bode well for the junior senator.
I would like to add to BearcatDem’s analysis by also pointing out that nearly as many Democrats approve of Sessions as disapprove (45%-47%). In addition, a majority of self-identifying “Liberals” apparently approve of Sessions. And most surprising to me, Alabamians who never attend church overwhelmingly approve (62%-33%) of Sessions. As BearcatDem suggests, these numbers stand absolutely no chance of holding up once Sessions’ positions on the issues are laid bare by an aggressive challenger.
Sessions is such a nonentity, no one gives a rat’s eyelash about him most of the time. Expose his real positions and put a candidate with real ideas next to him for contrast. His negatives will grow when Alabamians see how much better they could do.

Sessions is so vulnerable, but the power of incumbency is something to grapple with. In Alabama, name recognition always makes a big impact, but the fact that you see Sparks’ name on the gas pump every time you pump gas will be the difference maker. That sounds like a joke, but there’s probably more truth to it than we would like to admit. There’s a reason that every election season we see a wad of campaign signs on every interstate exit.
