Sessions Faces the Nation
Jeff Sessions appeared on Face the Nation (video, transcript) this past Sunday morning, and performed an about-face on his recent Iraq rhetoric. Sessions signaled that he no longer supports a lasting occupation of Iraq and that he would likely support troop withdrawals beginning in September.
I find myself agreeing with Crooks and Liars on this one:
I am instantly suspicious of this story. I don’t know whether they’re floating trial balloons, practicing disinformation, or if Jeff Sessions is really going out on a limb away from the party line.
There’s also a fourth theory, that Sessions may be moving to the political center on Iraq as he prepares for a re-election campaign. This recent AEA polling might have something to do with it:
Nearly half also said that in 2008 - when the nation elects a president and Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions will be seeking re-election - they would tend to vote for presidential and Senate candidates who support withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
